Melissa Goba

Soweto born Melissa Goba is an artist, writer, curator and producer who has over the past few years focused on the visual arts. She holds a Fine Arts Degree from the University of the Witwatersrand Her interest is primarily is on the global impact of popular culture. As an artist Goba is interested in the notion of Abstraction from and African perspective. Having grown up in Soweto during Apartheid in a township in turmoil, Goba uses Abstraction to account for her memory of events that have not been extensively documented and believes that the archive from this era is yet to delve as deeply as is necessary for a comprehensive history of a country. The narrative captured in her works varies between the imagined and the actual.

As a writer Goba has written for various publications including Art South Africa, Elle Magazine and Spana!. Goba has co-curated various projects including Jive Soweto! (A Homage to Sipho ‘Hotstix ’Mabuse and Soweto), The MTN New Contemporaries, Domestic and SPace: Currencies in Contemporary African Art (which formed part of the cultural programming during the FIFA 2010 World Cup). also consulted for various corporations in the management of their Art Collections providing services such as Valuations, Collection Gap Analysis, development Collection Policy and Investment Art
